Dec. 7th, 2009 12:16 pm Quotes (food and diets)

"More die in the United States of too much food than of too little."
~John Kenneth Galbraith, The Affluent Society

"Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are."
Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755 - 1826), The Physiology of Taste, 1825

"You don't have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces - just good food from fresh ingredients."
Julia Child (1912 - 2004)

"Reality check: you can never, ever, use weight loss to solve problems that are not related to your weight. At your goal weight or not, you still have to live with yourself and deal with your problems. You will still have the same husband, the same job, the same kids, and the same life. Losing weight is not a cure for life."
~Phillip C. McGraw, The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom, 2003

Jun. 3rd, 2008 01:19 pm Wisdom "borrowed" from my friend Misty

1. Life is what happens when you're busy making plans.

2. If you wait for the perfect time to do something, you never will.

3. Don't spend so much time planning your future that you forget to live your present.

These quotes are from a cute book that I re-discovered on one of our bookshelves. It's called "The Tao of Pooh" by Benjamin Hoff:

"You can't stay in your corner of the forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes."

"Those who have no compassion have no wisdom. Knowledge, yes; cleverness, maybe; wisdom, no. A clever mind is not a heart. Knowledge doesn't really care. Wisdom does."

"When you know and respect your Inner Nature, you know where you belong. You also know where you don't belong."

Feb. 26th, 2008 10:59 am Garden Journal

Rhodie seeds have been germinating for ten days. A few of the pots are starting to show the first tiny hints of germination.

NEW PLANT: Safflower. So pretty that I couldn't resist trying them. Good germination after a week. There are half a dozen little sprouts in the pot already.

Spring is just around the corner, and we couldn't resist some potted purple hyacinths. They fill the house with such a wonderful scent. And we even managed to find a spot where the cats won't come into contact with them.

This is also the season where seedling flats start taking over more of the sewing room. I LOVE seed-starting time. It's so full of bright promises of beauty (and tasty things to be eaten this summer).

Dec. 1st, 2007 09:35 pm In the spirit of the holiday season ...

I found this quote rather appropriate for the holiday season:

"You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving".

Nov. 23rd, 2007 10:15 pm A quote from Mark Swartz's column

"Pardon my utopian visions (a little too much Thoreau in my literature courses), but wouldn’t it be great if we could basically be who we are, do our best, get rewarded for merit and effort, yet still practice such fundamentals as fairness, kindness, unselfishness and patience?"

May. 15th, 2007 02:08 pm Haiku Generator

I tried out the angry goat haiku generator, and it produced a haiku about my cats:

"always typing well
let's see you ignore my

Apr. 20th, 2007 09:26 am A thought for today

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." -- Book of Galations 5:22-23 (New International Version of the Bible)

It seems to me that the world would be a better place if more people followed this concept. It's one of my cousin Sandi's favourite quotes.

Apr. 17th, 2007 10:17 am A bit of fun ...

I discovered Wikiquote (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Main_Page) and found the "random page" link to be rather entertaining.

Here's a few random quotes:

[Latin]
* Amicus optima vitae possessio.
o Translation: "A friend is the biggest treasure in life"

[Danish Proverbs]
* "Lige ved og næsten slår ingen mand af hesten."
o Translation: "'Almost' and 'nearly' do not throw a man from his horse".
o English Equivalent: "Close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades"

[Abraham Maslow]
"If you plan on being anything less than you are capable of being, you will probably be unhappy all the days of your life".
